“Habitat for Humanity, Stanislaus will work with God and the entire community to eliminate substandard housing in Stanislaus County by building and renovating owner occupied homes in partnership with qualifying families.”
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christian organization, founded in 1976 connecting people from all faiths and walks of life to eliminate substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to make adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat is founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent, affordable place to live in dignity and safety.
Habitat for Humanity, Stanislaus is an affiliate and is an autonomous, non-profit corporation with its own board of directors and committee structure founded in 1989. One of the founders Ruth Sesser was so dedicated to affordable housing and convinced Habitat constructed sustainable homes, that she built her home right in the middle of one of our subdivisions. Habitat is a hand up not a hand out. Houses are built or renovated using as much volunteer labor, tax-deductible donations, and donated materials as possible. Habitat never makes a profit on a home sold, though we do require the purchaser to repay 100% of the cost of the home in an amortized, zero-percent interest loan. The homeowner never pays more than 30% of their gross monthly income towards their home payment. Funds are then recycled and used to build more homes for future generations of homebuyers. Habitat serves families that have an excellent work and credit history. They represent an important part of our workforce and earn less than half of the area median income. There are no market-rate homes available for sale in this community for a price point that would be affordable for these homebuyers. Habitat is their only chance at living the American Dream. In addition, every family who is selected must complete 500 hours of “sweat equity.”
We impact neighborhoods, providing opportunities for empowerment with our housing education services, neighborhood revitalization and cleanup efforts, as well as our housing rehabilitation and new home construction. Our ReStore provides low-income households with opportunities to purchase discounted home remodeling supplies that would otherwise be cost prohibitive.
